The Mayor is elected at large to a four-year term, and is primarily responsible for the public safety of the community with emphasis on law enforcement and the day-to-day oversight and administration of the police department.
The Mayor is not a member of the Borough Council, but may attend all Council meetings and take part in the discussions. The Mayor also has the authority to break a tie vote of Borough Council.
The Mayor reviews each ordinance and resolution of a legislative nature enacted by Council, and may approve it by signing it, or has the option to veto it, or permit it to become law without signature. If the Mayor vetoes an ordinance or resolution, Council may override it only with a two-thirds vote.
Another function of the office is to serve as the official spokesman for the community and to represent the Borough at various civic and social activities.
